The imagery is irrelevant, I hope you will be reading the chapter instead as you listen to the music. Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, USN The father of the nuclear Navy, he spent most of his career battling entrenched collectives, and winning. This Wikipedia article is a good biography. General Alfred M. Gray, Jr., USMC This Wikipedia article describes the career of General Al Gray, who was the Commandant of the Marine Corps when I joined as a Second Lieutenant. His insistence on voracious reading ensured that all Marines exercised the same intent in battle. His leadership and insight was the backbone of the swift victory of Marine forces in Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm. Senator Jim Webb Former Marine war veteran, Naval Academy graduate, author, Secretary of the Navy under Ronald Reagan, and now United States Senator from Virginia, he was an inspiration for me and all warfighters from the Naval Academy in my era. Maneuver Warfare This Wikipedia article is a pretty good description of the concept of maneuver warfare, although it leaves a little to be desired. Like this book, which must be read cover to cover, maneuver warfare is difficult to fully understand unless you have been immersed in it. Top Chapter 3, Fundamental Concepts "The Communist Manifesto" The full text of the crowning glory of nineteenth-century collectivist thought. At least Karl Marx could be forgiven, as he hadn't had the opportunity to see how miserable collectivism makes life for its subjects. Modern collectivists have no such excuse. Ernest Rutherford This great man of science went from farm boy to Nobel Prize, back in the day when individual thought and acheivement mattered. Top Chapter 5, Prancing Rabbits Dancing Rabbit Commune Unbathed hippies gone wild. And spending your money by the truckload to show how unplugged they are. Top Chapter 6, The Font of Value Fischer-Tropsch Process These processes, from a branch of energy science nearly overlooked for a hundred years, holds promise as a rich field of alternate energy study. Sulfuric Acid Sulfuric acid is the king of industry. This Wikipedia article only barely scratches the surface of this important chemical. Top Chapter 11, Math and Science Biodiesel One of many internet recipes for making biodiesel. The original recipe we reference in the book, from biodieselcommunity.org, is no longer available. We have not tried the recipe above, but it is very similar to that we have used and is simple enough to not need a lot of special materials or equipment. In the original experiment we did for homeschool, we used waste vegetable oil (WVO) instead of clean oil, boiled it to remove any water, filtered through a coffee filter to remove crispies and then started the process more or less as shown in this new link. We also vigorously washed many times, accepting the emulsion and giving it time to settle out each time. As mentioned in the introduction at the link, there are more sophisticated recipes which measure (using titration) and recover some of the lost WVO from using this recipe (by adjusting the amount of catalyst or adding preliminary esterfication steps for free fatty acids), but this one is a good introduction to the concepts. John Saxon This former Air Force officer wrote the most in-depth home study materials for math and science that I have seen. He also battled small minds to get his materials accepted. Nitrous Oxide Diethyl Ether Halothane These important anaesthetics highlight the typical history of innovation. Much of what we use in our modern world, veiled behind expertise, had very humble origins. Do not attempt to make any of these! Top Chapter 12, Scholarship and Sadi Carnot Nicolas Leonard Sadi Carnot This one man, by writing down his thoughts in 1824, revolutionized steam power and laid the foundation for the entire science of thermodynamics. His work is still as valid today as when he wrote it. Top Chapter 18, The Drug War George H. W. Bush Prescott Sheldon Bush Samuel Prescott Bush Hard work and dedication and entrepreneurial excellence? All of these things are easy with old money in the pocket. As an entrepreneur, you will spend your day battling entrenched interests and the regulations that protect them from you. William John Bennett Give any man enough power, and he'll leave no stone unturned chasing you for your vices as his powerful friends ignore his. Iodine Pretty purple crystals, but such a danger they pose to collectivists who will eventually declare everything illegal. Say goodbye to innovation as we enter a dark age. "Overkill: The Rise of Paramilitary Police Raids in America" This 2006 CATO Institute paper by Radley Balko presents shocking evidence that we are on the wrong track. Unless you are a collectivist, in which case you probably think things are fine and dandy. Top Chapter 19, Gun Control The Nullification Crisis Before forming opinions about what started the Civil War, some background is in order. The Emancipation Proclamation Yay! Lincoln freed the slaves! Except for those he didn't. Top Chapter 21, Cho BRZONKALA v VPI STATE UNIV This case, from the United States Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, details the horrifying ordeal of Christy Brzonkala in the hands of justice after her (alleged) rape by a Virginia Tech football star. Warning, this case history is graphic. Virginia Tech fans probably better skip this one, as it details Virginia Tech's policy to not report on-campus rapes to the authorities (See OPINION Section 1, paragraph 7). For years after I left there in 1995, I tried to get everyone who would listen to not attend that school. I had no idea. Cho Shooting This site gives the report of the Virginia Tech Review Panel regarding the Cho rampage. Other resources will give the writings that Cho handed in as part of his assignments. Compare these to Poe or King or whoever you wish. Top |
